Every age sees the apocalypse in its own image, as the distinguished literary critic Frank Kermode observed in his book “The Sense of an Ending.” The apocalyptic imagination, he argued, imposes on history “neat, naïve patterns” presaging a turning point in the grand scheme of humanity.

“Regency Girls,” a new musical comedy set in the period of Jane Austen’s novels, begins on a note that fans of “Pride and Prejudice” will savor. The fate of the Benton family depends on finding husbands for the two oldest daughters, Elinor (Isabelle McCalla) and Jane (Kate Rockwell), both of whom are being courted by wealthy scions. Distress ensues when these savior suitors, who are bound for a yearlong voyage, fail to show up at the appointed hour to bid the ladies farewell.

“Ulysses” may not be James Joyce’s most difficult novel. That distinction would have to go to “Finnegans Wake,” a book that has been described as unreadable even by its most fervent admirers. But “Ulysses,” the modernist novel that changed the course of 20th century literature, is notoriously demanding. The book bested me when I first gave it a go in my student days. I expected to sprint through “Ulysses” in a couple of weeks but found myself running uphill in a race I feared might never end.

Wolfe, I was quibbling and quarreling with the reigning queen of Broadway. I expected to be agog, because whenever McDonald is on stage, no matter if it’s a musical, play or concert, my appreci- ation for the majesty of her brilliance soars.

RT @EricLevitz: Obama is very good at politics

Finally nabbed a counter seat at Pizzeria Sei. A waiter at E. Baldi who's from Naples said this was the closest you can get to true Napolitano pizza in Los Angeles. I think he may be right. (It's all about the olive oil.) https://t.co/AEVCLllrIC

This characteristically eloquent and nuanced review by @JustinCChang makes me want to see "Armageddon Time" even more. https://t.co/bxaYACooqM
