Despite a fast-paced venue pivot, Riverside Pride events in Danville continued without missing a beat at new locations Saturday. The main part of the day’s event was scheduled to happen at Ballad Brewing, which has hosted things for Danville-based Collidescope. At about noon, Ballad issued a statement on Facebook that its downtown location would be shuttered Saturday and Sunday.

Keith Silverman, who resigned last from the Danville School Board, died Monday. In his resignation, Silverman cited health issues. He has been absent from recent school board meetings. “Dr. Silverman was a longtime advocate for education in Danville,” Superintendent Angela Hairston said in a statement. “He was an educator by profession, which included his work in local tutoring programs and on our school board.

A prolonged period of high temperatures is setting in over Southside Virginia, bringing misery to those having to venture outside. Temperatures are expected to be above 90 degrees — flirting with 100 a few days — for at least a week, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. There are varying definitions for a heat wave, according to Stacie Hanes, a meteorologist with the Blacksburg office.

Volunteers hit Danville’s Riverwalk Trail on Saturday morning to pick up trash and debris as part of the United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County’s Day of Action. With pick-up grippers and orange trash bags, they started out the JTI Fountain at the Main Street Plaza heading out on the trail that runs along the Dan River in Danville on a sunny Saturday morning with temperatures still in the 70s.
