Balico — a company wanting to bring a data center complex to Pittsylvania County — on Monday announced it's withdrawing its application that goes before a public hearing Tuesday night. "The company is now evaluating alternative development options for the property in addition to the previously proposed campus," a Monday news release stated. One other alternative is a residential residential subdivision project.

David Joyce, who took over at Averett University in January, announced Friday he was stepping down, citing medical issues with his wife. Joyce was tapped to lead Averett after Tiffany Franks retired earlier this year amid swirling financial issues with the Danville institution. His resignation was effective Friday. Venita Mitchell, who serves as vice president for student engagement, will step into the “brief acting role” as president, the university announced Friday afternoon.

A day before the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors is poised to vote on a highly controversial data center and power facility, the Southern Environmental Law Center released a report detailing the health impact of the project. In February, the Charlottesville-based nonprofit sent a letter to the members of the board urging them to reject the proposal. A public hearing is planned at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chatham High School. Supervisors moved the venue because of an expected overflow crowd.

Just shy of six months since residents in the Whittles community of Pittsylvania County learned of plans for a data center and power plant, the board of supervisors is expected to decide the fate of the project that’s set off nothing short of a firestorm of controversy. The meeting itself could easily be one for the record books for length alone. Kim Van Der Hyde, the finance director for Pittsylvania County, said she only recalls one meeting going beyond midnight in her 26 years.
