Shape into four patties. Coat a grill with cooking spray. Place on rack. Cook five minutes on each side or until done.

A volunteer firefighter with the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Capt. Lee Puryear, rescued a man from the basement of a burning home on Link Puryear Road on April 14. “That’s what I signed up to do,” Puryear humbly stated. Still, Puryear said it made him feel good that he got to the scene of the fire when he did and was able to get the man trapped in the basement to safety. “If I hadn’t gotten there when I did, he probably would be dead right now,” Puryear acknowledged.

The future of two proposed solar sites in northern Halifax County still is uncertain after the board of supervisors cast a 4-4 tied vote on the sites at their Monday evening meeting. At the meeting, several citizens held up signs displaying the word “solar” with a line struck through it, indicating they did not want the supervisors to approve any more solar projects.

Giraffes, African penguins and flamingos soon will have a home in Halifax County. The animals will part of an exotic animal exhibition at a 38-acre property on River Road just west of South Boston — “Wilde Manor at Tarover.”The Halifax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a conditional use permit application submitted by Molly Waller and Nick Rich to operate Wilde Manor at Tarover at their Monday evening meeting.

You’ve got to try this one. It’s so good. 8 skinned and boned chicken breast halves½ t salt¼ t pepper3 T lemon juice½ c mayonnaise1 c fine chopped celery1 t dried tarragon (optional)1 lb. fresh spinach3 medium tomatoes cut in wedgesSprinkle chicken breast with salt and pepper. Arrange chicken in 9x13 dish. Sprinkle chicken breast with lemon juice. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Combine mayo, celery, tarragon and set aside. Remove stems from spinach, wash and pat dry.
