Three Democratic state representative candidates will meet the public this week, all hoping to succeed Rep. Mike Chapman, who is running for State Senate. Makah Tribal Council member Nate Tyler, Sequim school board member Eric Pickens, and legislative assistant Adam Bernbaum will appear at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St. The event is sponsored by the 24th District Democratic Committee.

Jefferson County’s lengthy permit process is about to get an upgrade that will consider requests in a more timely manner, according to the county’s Director of Community Development. “It’s already much better now than it was even a few months ago,” said Josh Peters, who has led the agency since June 2023. “We want to do better, so people know that they can come to us and they’ll get clear-cut, consistent answers.

The unwrapping of the Port Townsend Post Office last week drew holiday-related reactions but there is still a mystery about how much this particular gift will cost us. The building’s restoration began last March when the post office was wrapped in polyethylene film in order to restore the stone exterior to its original condition. The new old post office is scheduled to open at the end of January, according to Postmaster Denise Judd.

Jefferson County Commissioner Kate Dean announced Tuesday that she is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Dean hopes to succeed Rep. Derek Kilmer, who announced his retirement in November. Immediately after Kilmer’s retirement Dean floated the idea of running for his Sixth District seat. (Port Townsend Leader, November 15. 2023). Several weeks of research and meetings, both within and outside the district, convinced her to commit.
