A former Department of Infrastructure minister standing for re-election to Peel Town Commissioners says keeping ‘financial responsibility’ has been key to keeping rate increases low for the last few years. Ray Harmer, who joined the board in a by-election two years ago, hopes to use reserves from making ‘efficiencies’ to improve children’s play areas and for the Marine Parade development.

Local distance runner Lewis Crowe finished eighth in the Boston Marathon on Sunday. No, not THAT Boston Marathon, which takes place ‘across the pond’ next week, but Boston in Lincolnshire. Do not let that overshadow Lewis’s achievement, as there were 863 finishers in the event. Lewis ran a very impressive time of 2:41:41, taking just over 12 minutes off his previous best set in Valencia last December. He previously completed the Manchester Marathon last April.

A candidate standing in the upcoming election wants to try and tackle the dog poo problem in Peel and is open to ideas. Sharon Lambert, who’s retired, says she’d like to see more ‘transparency’ from the commissioners with its communication and would also be looking to improve its social media usage. Residents on the electoral register will be able to vote at Peel Town Hall from 8am until 8pm on Thursday 24 April.

Endurance athlete Sarah Webster has notched up yet another incredible achievement by claiming two British records. Although she has moved back to live in the UK and is now running in the colours of Lewes AC, Sarah is still very much one of our own after contributing such a huge amount to athletics on the Isle of Man over the past decade. She represented the Isle of Man in the women’s Marathon at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The multi-talented Eve Martin proved what a fine multi-event athlete she is by winning the Lancashire U13 Girls Pentathlon at Stanley Park. This competition in Blackpool was part of the two-day Lancashire Combined Events Championships 2025. The Manx Harriers athlete finished second in the 70 metres hurdles with 12.5 seconds, not her best time but she was running into a stiff headwind. In the long jump she was the winner with a distance of 4.24 metres.

A candidate standing for re-election in Castletown says he would push government for an all island leisure rate to support the southern swimming pool. Colin Leather, who is a current commissioner, believes the new fire station car park will resolve the majority of the parking issues and would also like to install a handrail in Barracks Square to help people with disabilities.

Residents in Garff will not be getting a rates rebates even after the uncontested local authority election. Garff Commissioners met last night (April 2) to discuss a number of issues affecting the parish. Commissioner Julie Pinson said she has had a number of residents ask her about the election budget and whether a rate rebate will offered to residents because there was an uncontested election.

Castletown Commissioners says damage to a bin next to a block of toilets is ‘dangerous and costly’ for residents. The local authority claims someone has ‘attempted’ to set fire to it using all the paper from the facilities, during the night. It says a basic bin can cost several hundreds pounds to replace and the anti-social behaviour in the town is ‘incredibly frustrating and disappointing’.
