The 59th annual National Folk Festival is on in Canberra after last year's event faced falling attendance and ticket sales combined with rising costs. Artistic co-director Holly Downes says the festival has turned a corner, in part because it offers a wider range of entertainment than some other music festivals. The outgoing head of orthopaedic surgery at Canberra Hospital says the loss of a sixth surgeon is "not surprising" given changes to operational procedures he says "all of the directors of department hate". "There is no surgeon in the hospital who's happy about this," Professor Paul Smith said. "The system is really not conducive to a satisfactory standard of practice for the clinicians who are progressively being disenfranchised in that whole process.

When Tim Ceaser's wallet flew out the window of his car as a 19-year-old, he thought it was gone forever. But 30 years later a friend sent him a stranger's Facebook post in the Queanbeyan Community Notice Board group looking to reunite the wallet with its owner. "Like a lightning bolt struck me, it took me straight back to the time living in Queanbeyan and I lost my wallet," he said.
