A POLITICAL upset defined the May 12, 2025, midterm elections in Cebu Province, as neophyte Pamela Baricuatro unseated incumbent Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. Thirty-one incumbent mayors successfully defended their seats, with several running unopposed, including Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr, Alcantara Mayor Fritz Lastimoso, and Barili Mayor John-john Gica. Other reelected mayors included Toledo City’s Joie Perales, Carcar City’s Patrick Barcenas, and Naga City’s Valdemar Chiong.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has increased its coverage for outpatient malaria services by 50 percent, from P780 to P1,170, as part of efforts to bolster the country’s fight against the disease. This is part of its renewed commitment to support the country’s goal of eliminating the disease by 2030, after it saw a sharp rise in cases last year. In the Philippines, Palawan is the only remaining province with active malaria cases.
