A POLITICAL upset defined the May 12, 2025, midterm elections in Cebu Province, as neophyte Pamela Baricuatro unseated incumbent Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. Thirty-one incumbent mayors successfully defended their seats, with several running unopposed, including Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr, Alcantara Mayor Fritz Lastimoso, and Barili Mayor John-john Gica. Other reelected mayors included Toledo City’s Joie Perales, Carcar City’s Patrick Barcenas, and Naga City’s Valdemar Chiong.

CEBU City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia will seek the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) assistance in finding out the individuals behind the text scam which dragged his name. Garcia took to social media past midnight on May 12, 2025 to warn the public about a “black propaganda” being spread against him. The text blast that was disseminated contained instructions to recipients to proceed to a barangay hall to get their P5,000.
