    In 2017, at the end of his first year at Samford University, a private Christian university in Birmingham, Alabama, Nathan Peace realized he’d never “pray the gay away” and he’d never “turn straight”. Peace had grown up in a “churchy” family in Georgia and attended Southern Baptist services his entire life. In high school, he showed up early for Bible study and participated in group prayers before marching band performances. In the 2016 election, he voted for Donald Trump.

    On a Sunday night, a week before our one-year anniversary, my husband came home and handed me his wedding ring. He’d cheated, he told me, and “didn’t deserve it anymore.” He wanted to break up. I felt betrayed, of course. And terrified to tell my friends and family that my relationship had fallen apart. I was 25; he was 24. In the early months of our marriage, we were giddy. Everything felt new. We’d invite people over for dinner and get ready together in the mornings. We established a happy routine.

    A piece of clay dropping in a ceramic pot is the centerpiece of Leilehua Lanzilotti’s sound installation (single-channel video directed by Lanzilotti, cinematography by Gahlord Dewald) in the “Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within” exhibit at The Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York. Lanzilotti, a 2022 Pulitzer Prize finalist in music, released their latest album, “the sky in our hands, our hands in the sky” in June.

    The State Advisory Council on Indian Education (SACIE) shared its annual report with the State Board of Education earlier this month. The report, which SACIE presents to the Board each year, provides an analysis of American Indian students’ performance regarding end-of-grade (EOG) scores, dropout and graduation rates, and suspension data.
