    Several Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies and two children were honored at Cerritos City Hall on Thursday for helping save a toddler who nearly drowned in a lake. The close call occurred around 8 p.m. on March 29 at Don Knabe Community Park. Deputies said a man was pushing one child in a stroller when his 2 1/2-year-old son rode ahead of them on his bike and out of his sight. Preston Hoang, 11, and a friend were fishing in the lake when they first noticed the toddler had crashed into the water.

    Two high-speed pursuits in Orange County involving two stolen Priuses ended Friday with both suspects in custody after one driver fled into the harbor at Sunset Beach, authorities said. Huntington Beach police initially spotted a stolen Toyota Prius in Newport Beach and began pursuit. A white Prius crashed near downtown Huntington Beach, with a female driver quickly detained by a bystander.

    A man was pulled to safety after his SUV plunged into a rushing creek that was swollen amid the storms in Orange County on Thursday. The Orange County Fire Authority responded to a portion of Trabuco Creek in San Juan Capistrano in the area of Trabuco Creek Road and Rosenbaum Road at about 9:39 a.m.The vehicle, with a man inside, was somehow swept into the water and became lodged against trees in the middle of the creek.

    Opening statements were held Wednesday in the trial of an Orange County judge who is accused of fatally shooting his wife at the family’s home in 2023. Prosecutors say Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 74, had been drinking heavily and arguing with his wife, Sheryl when he pulled a pistol from his ankle holster and shot her in the chest on Aug. 3. The couple’s adult son reported the shooting and called the police.

    IRVINE, Calif. (KTLA) – For the first time, a fire detection system invented by a Newport Beach teenager will be tested in a real-world situation. Seventeen-year-old Ryan Honary’s system, which he has been developing for five years, will be deployed near the 133 and 405 freeways in Irvine. Honary’s invention started as a science fair project and has grown into a company called Sensory AI. The system uses three sensors to detect flame, smoke, and heat. Recently, it was upgraded with infrared cameras.
