Few assets stir as much debate and controversy as gold. While some financial giants, such as Warren Buffett, dismiss it for its lack of “utility value”, others, such as Ray Dalio, advocate for its inclusion in portfolios as a hedge against economic uncertainty. Despite the ongoing discourse, most superannuation funds seem to be overlooking the potential benefits of gold, which surged to a record high of $US2400 ($3754) an ounce in April, in their investment strategies.

The real appeal of Bunzl is that it has a long-term track record of deploying capital at very attractive rates of around 20% and it currently has a strong balance sheet which would allow it to potentially accelerate its levels of capital deployment and offset any near-term organic weakness. In particular, we note that the debt-to-EBITDA ratio (which measures how much income is available to pay down debt) hasn't been this good since 2006.

Self-storage is one sector of the commercial property market that's booming. A downside is that retail investors who want to jump on the self-storage bandwagon have limited options, but a new kid on the block will increase their access. The sector proved to be one of the most resilient industries in Australia during the pandemic. As more people worked from home, many needed to declutter to provide more space and some of this "clutter" was moved into self-storage units.

We are in the midst of reporting season, and one company that has turned in a good result is Bapcor (ASX:BAP). Bapcor shares rose 5.9% on the day their financial year 2023 results were released. Bapcor is a wholesaler and retailer of parts for trucks and cars. Their business has four main segments. The largest segment by revenue is the Specialist Wholesale segment which services the truck and specialist wholesale markets.
