We’ve already poured out a Summer Shandy for the 157-year-old Leinenkugel’s brewery in Chippewa Falls, shuttered this winter by corporate parent Molson Coors. A play by the Leinenkugel family to buy back their historic brewery seems like not much more than a Hail Mary. But what will come of that brewery’s also-closed younger cousin in Milwaukee? The Tenth Street Brewery along I-43 on the edge of Downtown was not long ago a big piece of Molson Coors’ craft beer plans.

Mike and Marshia Crowley had been avid hobby photographers for years before launching the Life in the Northwoods website and Facebook page in 2012 to share their perspectives of the beauty of the region. “I loved it for the fun of it and something to do together, while Mike got more serious and technical,” Marshia says. After Mike died in 2022 at age 76, Marshia has continued posting wildlife and scenic photography to Life in the Northwoods.

Everyone’s got a number, whether you know it or not. I’m not sure how many breweries I’ve visited — 200-some? Maybe a bit more? Joel Geier knows his number, and as of Jan. 17, it was 1,379. Visiting that many breweries — stacked end to end, it would be more than three years of daily visits — requires a love of breweries, of course, but also requires a unique confluence of circumstances and a certain Pokemonesque “catch ’em all” mindset.

A photographer’s eye is always looking, noticing. Joe Garza was passing through the countryside near Deerfield, east of Madison, when this scene began to take shape outside his car windows. He spoke with us about how he captured the shot. What is your favorite thing about this photo? What “makes” it?

November’s news that Molson Coors is closing the 157-year-old Leinenkugel’s brewery in Chippewa Falls was the biggest Wisconsin beer news of 2024. Here are my four top takeaways:1. Ouch. This was a gut punch for just about everyone involved. You have to feel for Chippewa Falls, a town of about 15,000 that is nevertheless known across the Midwest and beyond because the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. has been making beer there for six generations.
