DEEP CREEK LAKE — Deep Creek Lake recently witnessed an extraordinary event as over 120 participants explored the inner workings of the Deep Creek Hydroelectric Station and dam. Organized by the Deep Creek Lake Centennial (DCL100) Committee and made possible by Brookfield Renewable, the owner and operator of the power station, the tours took place over May 13-14 and provided visitors with rare access to areas usually closed to the public.

Seventy-five years ago, a new kind of drive-in restaurant opened on Beverly Boulevard in Hollywood. promised to do away with carhops (and tipping) by sending food down a conveyor belt directly to waiting automobiles parked around the building. The place lasted for about five minutes until the drive-thru window was born, but employers have long dreamed of eliminating pesky humans from the workplace.

Pico lived large in his day, partying and gambling and building lavish monuments around Los Angeles, but died nearly broke. After he died, his tomb was vandalized and his wife's body stripped of her jewels.

Sacramento city leaders and advocacy groups raised concerns at Tuesday’s City Council meeting about proposed layoffs, fee hikes and service cuts. They said they’re worried the city’s plans to close a $62 million budget deficit take too much of a toll on youth and emergency services.
