It’s hard to imagine two more different approaches to the Frieze Artist Award’s 2024 theme of ‘advanced technologies’ than those of Choi Goen and Lawrence Lek. The winners in Seoul (Choi) and London (Lek) use, respectively, defunct household appliances and artificial intelligence. Choi’s work is scrap metal; Lek’s is glittering digital superfutures. Both artists, though, look beyond the surface.

Opened on Wilshire Boulevard as Roberts & Tilton in 1999, Roberts Projects moved from Miracle Mile to Washington Boulevard in Culver City and now occupies a 10,000 square-foot space on South La Brea Avenue. People’s Pottery Project is a Los Angeles ceramics studio with a difference. Although part of a proud tradition of female Californian ceramicists, it was founded by and helps the formerly incarcerated across both making and business skills. Since 2019, the nonprofit has campaigned for prison abolition and creative empowerment and employed formerly incarcerated people, foregrounding women and the queer, trans and nonbinary communities.
