An appeals court has granted a new trial for a former South Florida corrections officer sentenced last year to 13 years in prison for fatally shooting her boyfriend nearly four years ago. Atoya Holmes was initially facing a second-degree murder charge for killing 52-year-old Verdell Goins inside her car in Miami Gardens after leaving a Miami Dolphins game in November of 2021. But jurors in 2023 found her guilty of a lesser charge of manslaughter.

A man accused of shooting his ex-mother-in-law in Miami Gardens was hoping to get placed on house arrest to wait for his trial at home. Bilal Ismail, 49, is facing attempted first-degree murder for allegedly shooting his ex-wife's mother in the hand and head. On Wednesday, Gary Florencio, a Miami Gardens police officer, told Judge Christine Hernandez, the bullet, which was fired from a handmade gun, went through the victim's forehead and into her lungs.

A woman who was arrested for a 2023 hit-and-run in Miami Gardens that hurt two pedestrians and killed one woman will be going to trial after prosecutors took a plea deal off the table on Monday. Sharon Leola Cox, 62, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, two counts of leaving a crash involving no serious injury, leaving the scene of an accident and causing property damage, and driving with a suspended license.

The luxury real estate mogul Alexander brothers and their friend are seeking to dismiss their South Florida sexual battery charges related to an alleged gang rape. Miami-Dade prosecutors claim Ohad Fisherman, a South Florida real estate broker, joined Alon and Oren Alexander, when he pinned a 25-year-old woman inside a Miami Beach apartment on New Year's Eve in 2016. Fisherman and Alon were charged in December with one count of sexual battery by multiple perpetrators.
