A retired Miami-Dade Police lieutenant who opened fire on her ex-boyfriend and led police on an hours-long standoff back in 2023 was sentenced to prison Tuesday under a plea deal. Evelyn Fernandez, 44, appeared in court to plead guilty to attempted murder, discharging a firearm, aggravated stalking and other charges in the Oct. 27, 2023 incident. Miami-Dade CorrectionsUnder the deal, Fernandez was sentenced to seven years in prison with credit for time served, followed by 20 years of probation.

A man convicted of ambushing and killing another man outside a North Miami motel back in 2013 in a shocking murder that was caught on camera has avoided the death penalty. Jurors on Thursday recommended Anthawn Ragan, 30, serve life in prison rather than face the death penalty, more than a decade after the killing. Ragan was found guilty last month of of murdering 21-year-old Luis Perez at the Motel 7 at 13445 Northwest 7th Avenue on Nov. 1, 2013.

A Miami man who police said killed a mother and her son because he "heard voices" that "told him to do it," and believed one of the victims was the devil based on movies he'd watched, was found guilty by jurors on two counts of first-degree murder. Ronnie Candelaria, 32, was convicted on Thursday for the premeditated murder of 62-year-old Gale Sikora and her 24-year-old son, Anthony Sikora. The shooting happened in 2014 inside a home in the area of Southwest 143rd Avenue and Southwest 96th Street.
