The Denton City Council certified the May 3 election results during a special called meeting Tuesday afternoon, followed by ordering the runoff election for District 3 to be held on Saturday, June 7. District 3 will see candidates Suzi Rumohr and Margie Ellis facing off in the runoff for the council seat after Ellis received three more votes than candidate Karen Jill DeVinney, who acknowledged her loss Monday on her campaign Facebook page.

The 89th legislative session currently unfolding in Austin has Denton leaders concerned about legislation that has been introduced to take away more local control — particularly related to development. Though he ran unopposed two years ago, Beck drew what appeared to be a difficult challenger with former campaign adviser Nick Stevens, a small business owner and leader of Decriminalize Denton.

Denton City Council District 3 will see a runoff between candidates Suzi Rumohr and Margie Ellis — or possibly Rumohr and Karen DeVinney if she gains any late ballots or requests a recount that turns out in her favor. Both Ellis and DeVinney received 28% of the vote — with only two votes placing Ellis (587) ahead of DeVinney (585), according to unofficial election results from the Denton County Elections Administration on Saturday night.
