Lake Charles, Louisiana, U.S.A.-based food manufacturing firm Big Easy Foods, which produces wild-caught Gulf shrimp products, among others, may have the permits for its Independence, Louisiana-based Gulf Island Shrimp and Seafood processing plant pulled after ignoring years of complaints about odors. The plant, according to local residents, gives off a strong “spoiled seafood” odor, according to WBRZ.

Massive funding cuts that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has made to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) Cooperative Program are cutting off traditionally reliable buyers of the nation’s seafood. The LFPA cuts amount to an estimated USD 1.13 billion (EUR 1 billion) and are hampering the ability of food banks across the nation to feed local populations with safe, fresh food options, including local seafood.

U.K. grocery CEOs and retail groups warn that Britons’ food costs will increase as retailers face increasing inflation and labor rates. Food manufacturers and retailers are still evaluating the impact of the 10 percent U.S. tariffs on U.K. goods, but said inflation is a likely result. The U.K. Government has launched a consultation asking U.K. businesses to comment on options, including retaliatory action – and which commodities should have retaliatory tariffs.
