EAST HARTFORD - One person was taken to the hospital following a house fire on Orchard Terrace Monday night, a fire official said. The three people in the home were able to get out on their own, and a pet cat later was found alive inside, Assistant Chief Eric R. Munsell said. The fire started in a bedroom shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, Munsell said. Firefighters arrived within three minutes and encountered smoke coming from a second-floor bedroom window, he said.

HARTFORD - A group that honors victims of homicides and other violent deaths is gathering "in compassionate concern" after three people were wounded in a church Friday when a melee that included a shooting and a stabbing broke out during a funeral. Calling it a "Call to Action" vigil, Mothers United Against Violence scheduled the gathering for 5 p.m. Tuesday at the unlikely scene of the violent outbreak, the Gospel Lighthouse Apostolic Church on Main Street.

ROCKY HILL - Firefighters helped a distressed mother on Mother's Day by plucking her offspring - 11 ducklings - from a storm drain. The unusual rescue got underway at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday when a crew responded to a call from an apartment complex on Sagamore Lane, firefighters said in a Facebook post. A resident said the mother duck was calling for help because her ducklings were stuck in a storm drain.
