Hundreds of volunteers came together at Place Ville-Marie in Montreal on Saturday to admire 344 knitted and crocheted blankets made by other volunteers from across the province to help women in needAlong the floor, it was a cushy, immense kaleidoscope of colour - all created by hand. The project is called “Crafted for Courage” and was organized by the Nota Bene Foundation. The community-driven art initiative is by women - for women. “We have hundreds of volunteers,” said founder Nori Bortoluzzi.

In Ville Saint-Laurent, a group of strangers became friends when they decided to help a stranded animal. A cat stuck high up in a tree for more than a day seemed to be in trouble — until neighbours decided to reach out. Gabrielle Lacoste said, “He just looked very distressed. And we spoke to our neighbour, and he had been up there for over 24 hours.” So, she started knocking on doors along Sainte-Croix Avenueasking for help from neighbours she hadn’t known.

As the warmer weather arrives, plenty of people are taking their bike out for a ride. While wearing a helmet while riding is recommended, it’s not a law — though some think it should be. Dominic Roussel knows from experience how helpful a helmet is. He was recently “doored” when a driver opened their car just as he was cycling by. “I smashed through the window, through the frame and rolled and got up and my adrenaline was surging and roaring!” says Roussel.

Cooking up a storm in the new kitchen, Chef Mark Straughton said the new central kitchen offers a recipe for success. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “Brand new, sparkling, shiny, everything. It turns on when you want it to turn on.
