    The Oblate Sisters of Providence, the nation's oldest operating Black Catholic religious order, have elected Sr. Marcia Hall as their new superior general, the 21st in their 196-year history. The order elected their new administration on April 24 in Baltimore, where they were founded in 1829 by Venerable Mary Lange and the Sulpician Fr. James Nicholas Joubert.

    As I watched former President Jimmy Carter's funeral on Jan. 9, the testimonials of his courage, wisdom and integrity — delivered within the context of worship and Christian witness that anchored Carter's life — moved me deeply, particularly in contrast to the 47th president who will soon be sworn into office. Like many others, I remembered Jimmy Carter more for what he did after he left office than for any policies he enacted.

    Esther Ngemba was 5 years old when civil war came to her city in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2005. As the soldiers banged at the heavy front doors of her home, Esther's two teenage sisters hid between mattresses upstairs to avoid being raped or abducted. Esther remembers her mother cuddling her tightly as she descended the stairs. "Usually if you are holding a baby the soldiers show more empathy," she told me. But it didn't help.
