As I watched former President Jimmy Carter's funeral on Jan. 9, the testimonials of his courage, wisdom and integrity — delivered within the context of worship and Christian witness that anchored Carter's life — moved me deeply, particularly in contrast to the 47th president who will soon be sworn into office. Like many others, I remembered Jimmy Carter more for what he did after he left office than for any policies he enacted.

Esther Ngemba was 5 years old when civil war came to her city in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2005. As the soldiers banged at the heavy front doors of her home, Esther's two teenage sisters hid between mattresses upstairs to avoid being raped or abducted. Esther remembers her mother cuddling her tightly as she descended the stairs. "Usually if you are holding a baby the soldiers show more empathy," she told me. But it didn't help.

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm pretty much a political junkie. It's probably because I grew up in the '60s amid civil rights marches, political assassinations and the peace movement. I quickly learned that big, positive, changes in my country only come after months or years of planning, educating and organizing. I developed a lifelong habit of assiduously reading news, including our online Cleveland Plain Dealer, The New York Times and various online blogs most days of the week.
