WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York politician who served 23 terms representing Harlem in the U.S. House of Representatives, has died at age 94. No cause of death was released for the trailblazing lawmaker, who helped found the Congressional Black Caucus and was one of the longest-serving House members in history. "Congressman Rangel was the very definition of a life devoted to public service,” the CBC said in a statement following his death on May 26.

Lillian Boutté, an internationally known jazz and gospel singer from New Orleans, has died after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. She was 75 years old. Her family announced the news on May 23, the day of her death.

WASHINGTON — The Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart will ordain three men to the priesthood on Saturday, May 31, the latest addition to its growing crop of young religious serving African Americans. The historic community, also known as the Josephites, will gather at St. Luke Catholic Church in Washington for the ordination of Chidiebere Dominic, Linus James, and Charles Nwamadi, who became transitional deacons in December.

The Oblate Sisters of Providence, the nation's oldest operating Black Catholic religious order, have elected Sr. Marcia Hall as their new superior general, the 21st in their 196-year history. The order elected their new administration on April 24 in Baltimore, where they were founded in 1829 by Venerable Mary Lange and the Sulpician Fr. James Nicholas Joubert.
