The reconstructed replica of Fort Mose—the first free Black settlement in America—is set for a grand unveiling next month in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida. An opening weekend will take place May 9-10 at Fort Mose Historic State Park, where construction began just over a year ago on the $3 million-dollar project. The celebration will begin with a ribbon-cutting featuring various community partners.

A trial date has been set for the federal corruption case against three public officials in Mississippi’s capital region, including a Black Catholic in Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens II. The Department of Justice indicted Owens, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and City Councilman Aaron Banks last fall, alleging bribery that involved a downtown development. U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan III said Friday that the trial will take place beginning July 13, 2026.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has set a Houston-area special election for Tuesday, Nov. 4, to fill a vacant U.S. House seat formerly held by the late Sylvester Turner before his unexpected death in March. The long-awaited decision was announced April 7, after Democratic officials demanded for weeks that the governor act. After failing to meet a deadline to hold the election in May, Abbott released the news with a sharp criticism of local election officials.

Detroit’s newest Catholic worship space in 60 years, a chapel at the Jesuits’ all-boys Loyola High School, has been hit by a stray bullet just days after opening, 40 students were inside the new St. Peter Claver Chapel on Monday morning when the incident occurred. According to police, no one was injured. The school also released a statement, stating that the bullet came through a window just before the students were to begin prayer.
