AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Texas House of Representatives gave final approval to Senate Bill 2 Thursday, the legislation that could create a universal education savings account program in Texas. The program would allow families to use taxpayer dollars to pay for private school tuition. The final vote was 86-61. All but two Republicans voted for the bill. Two others - Rep. Dade Phelan and Rep. Gary VanDeaver - joined all Democrats who were present to vote against. Three Democrats were absent from the vote.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The suspect accused of causing the deaths of five people in a deadly pileup on Interstate 35 in north Austin last month is set for a bond hearing, according to online records. Solomun Weldekeal-Araya, 37, will appear in court on April 30, according to Travis County's online criminal docket. He currently faces six counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. Five people were killed and 11 others injured in the crash on March 13 on I-35 near Parmer Lane.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A man is dead after allegedly running up to his ex-girlfriend's vehicle with a pickaxe, police said. Austin police officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting at an apartment complex on North Lamar Boulevard, near West Parmer Lane, around 4:40 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, officers found a man, later identified as 30-year-old Henry Martinez, in the parking lot with apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
