Library directors across the county are worrying about cuts to their support coming from Ohio and the federal government. Local leaders and elected officials have pushed back against a bill introduced by State Senator Sandra O’Brien, which would impact bed taxes in the county. The bill, introduced Jan. 28, would require a county with a population of 700,000 or less which created an additional bed tax for a Convention Facilities Authority to cease levying the tax. The bill has been assigned to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Ashtabula County currently charges a 5% bed tax.

While the county doesn’t have many events for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, local organizations will commemorate Black History Month in February in a variety of ways. Ashtabula NAACP President Liz Penna said the organization will host an event from noon-4 p.m. Feb. 15 at Edgewood High School, with vendors and guest speakers. Penna said the organization is planning many other events for the month, which will be announced soon.

Jan. 17—ASHTABULA — Beth Cybulski has been appointed the new executive director of LEADERship Ashtabula County. Founded in 1989, the organization hosts classes and programs for county adults and children, to teach them about the area and surrounding region. Cybulski, who is also on the Geneva Area City School Board and Geneva Business Women Inc., said she wasn't sure about the position at first.
