Library directors across the county are worrying about cuts to their support coming from Ohio and the federal government. Local leaders and elected officials have pushed back against a bill introduced by State Senator Sandra O’Brien, which would impact bed taxes in the county. The bill, introduced Jan. 28, would require a county with a population of 700,000 or less which created an additional bed tax for a Convention Facilities Authority to cease levying the tax. The bill has been assigned to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Ashtabula County currently charges a 5% bed tax.

While the county doesn’t have many events for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, local organizations will commemorate Black History Month in February in a variety of ways. Ashtabula NAACP President Liz Penna said the organization will host an event from noon-4 p.m. Feb. 15 at Edgewood High School, with vendors and guest speakers. Penna said the organization is planning many other events for the month, which will be announced soon.

Founded in 1989, the organization hosts classes and programs for county adults and children, to teach them about the area and surrounding region. Cybulski, who is also on the Geneva Area City School Board and Geneva Business Women Inc., said she wasn't sure about the position at first.

The court received a 99.8% rating from Ohio Alcohol Monitoring System, according to a press release from the court. Western County Court Judge Casey O'Brien said his office learned about the statistics last week. "It was great to find out," he said.

CONNEAUT — The United States Marshals' Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested 18-year-old Quinton Gaines Jr. at the 500 block of Madison Street Wednesday, according to a release from the marshals. According to the release, Gaines is suspected of murdering 26-year-old Chazz Williams in Pasadena, Texas. The release said the Pasadena Police Department found Williams dead in his vehicle Dec. 24, 2024 from several gunshot wounds.

Comic books have become foundational to American culture, as many characters are in movies, shows and video games. While not as large as cities like Cleveland, Ashtabula County sports its own comic scene. Tony Capo, the owner of Geneva’s Robot Zero Comics, tries to bring young people into comic books at a time of less paper media. Robots Comics has done well, but is often “riding the middle,” Capo said. “There are busy times, and there are slow times, like any other industry,” he said.
