JEFFERSON — An Ashtabula man had his initial appearance in court before Magistrate Joseph Macejko on a variety of charges including attempted murder on Friday, according to court records and Ashtabula County Prosecutor April Grabman. Joshua Michael Maynard, 32, was indicted May 1 on three separate charges relating to alleged incidents between Jan. 1, 2020 and Sept. 1, 2024, according to court records.

JEFFERSON — First graders learning the basics of agriculture didn’t seem to mind when part of that education included drinking milkshakes at 9:30 in the morning. The milkshakes were just one way of illustrating where food comes from, and that Ashtabula County is an important link in the food chain. A wide variety of stations were located throughout the fairgrounds Friday morning, showing how to milk a cow and hands-on experiences on how to make butter.

A running career that started almost 10 years ago took on a new challenge recently, as Jefferson’s Craig Golen ran his fifth Boston Marathon, and 12 days later, followed it up with a 50-mile run. “I started running 5k’s in 2016, thinking that was such a far distance for me, [and] ran my first marathon the next year in 2017,” Golen said in an email interview. The winners of the 2025 Ashtabula Botany Competition were announced Wednesday during a brunch at the Jefferson United Methodist Church. The competition has taken place for 35 years, and encourages county high school students to learn about botany and perhaps consider it as a career, said Mary Howe who has been helping organize the event for all those years.
