Sir Richard Branson has said he does not believe that most Americans support Donald Trump’s actions since returning to the White House. The Virgin Group founder said the consequences of the US president’s interventions in areas such as global trade, the war in Ukraine and climate change were “awful for everyone” – US citizens included. He said: “I honestly think this is a fairly small elite of people around Trump. I don’t think he is carrying the vast majority of Americans in what he is doing.

Lake District chiefs are to ban electric boats from more than 20 bodies of water across the national park after a series of near-misses with wild swimmers. The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) said a clampdown on electric boats was necessary “to prevent nuisance or damage” after bylaws from the early 1970s were rendered obsolete by technological change and a jump in the recreational usage of smaller lakes.

While the use of outboard motors has been prohibited on all but four of the Lake District's bodies of water for 50 years, electric vessels are not covered by current bylaws.

Mr Fitzpatrick left the board as part of the January fundraising, which comprised $60m from new investors and around $25m from distressed-debt specialist Mudrick Capital, together with the conversion of $130m of debt into equity. Vertical has cash reserves of £65m following a deal, which handed control to Mudrick. However, the start-up said it was is set to burn through £100m in the next 12 months. The company lost £65m last year and has yet to earn any revenue.
