LAMEGO, Portugal — A cutting board with a neatly arranged row of glistening, meaty purple octopus limbs was slid in front of me. “You can go ahead and start chopping,” chef João said matter-of-factly as others in the cooking class went dutifully ahead with their assigned tasks. When I looked down at the mollusk’s arms, all I could think of was the 2020 film “My Octopus Teacher.” Also, I was starting to feel the clamminess of a vasovagal episode about to wash over me.

United’s MileagePlus customers can earn and use miles on JetBlue, while JetBlue’s TrueBlue members can earn and use points on United flights. The airlines will also offer flights on one another’s websites and apps.

I’m unsure what this says about me, but some of my best travel memories were when I could leave everything behind and pretend I was Robinson Crusoe, minus the cannibals. She splurged for a $4,300 seat in business class and was prepared for 13 hours of lie-flat comfort and cocktails. As she put her carry-on in the overhead bin, she looked down to find a woman comfortably settled in her seat. “I told her nicely, ‘I think you’re in my seat,’ and she just stared at me,” Casey said.

The hotels that populate best-of lists tend to be flashy properties with nightly rates that make you say, “ouch” when you receive your credit card bill. You know the type — the shampoo scent is customized for the hotel, there’s a multi-page pillow menu, and the lobby bar usually has a name like Cloak + Talon or the Dandelion Collective.
