NAROK, Kenya — Before boarding the flight to Africa for vacation, I made a vow. I told myself I would not, under any circumstances, write about my trip. Even a travel writer deserves a vacation. I left my notebooks and pens at home and was prepared to switch my brain into airplane mode for 2½ weeks. You may have gathered by the presence of this story that I broke my vow quite spectacularly.

Three years ago, Play Airlines swooped into Boston, promising no-frills, inexpensive flights to Iceland and connections to the major capitals of Europe. But last week, the low-fare carrier announced it would cease operations to the United States in October. The stoppage is part of a series of changes that two of Play’s largest shareholders included in a plan to take over the airline, which has been struggling, according to an announcement Play shared on June 9.

LAMEGO, Portugal — A cutting board with a neatly arranged row of glistening, meaty purple octopus limbs was slid in front of me. “You can go ahead and start chopping,” chef João said matter-of-factly as others in the cooking class went dutifully ahead with their assigned tasks. The partnership is not a merger, but it will allow passengers on both airlines to use and collect points interchangeably. United’s MileagePlus customers can earn and use miles on JetBlue, while JetBlue’s TrueBlue members can earn and use points on United flights. The airlines will also offer flights on one another’s websites and apps.

I’m unsure what this says about me, but some of my best travel memories were when I could leave everything behind and pretend I was Robinson Crusoe, minus the cannibals. On Jan. 6, 2021 (does that date ring any bells?) I was staying in a treehouse in the wilds of New Hampshire. It was just as fantastic as it sounds. I would spend my days skiing on a mountain that had virtually no cell service. A few stray text messages managed to get through, but they made little sense.
