A few isolated thunderstorms popped up across parts of western Arkansas this afternoon, including a quick but impressive one over western Pulaski County. A strong updraft briefly fueled the storm before it let out an outflow boundary, a cool rush of air that cut off its energy supply. These pop-up storms were rare today, and most of the state stayed dry with sunshine returning by evening.

After a weak disturbance overnight, a few scattered showers are lingering this morning, mainly across western and central Arkansas. Cloud cover is widespread to start the day, but skies will begin to clear this afternoon. While a stray shower can’t be ruled out through the evening, most of the state will dry out with sunshine peeking through. As clouds clear, you may notice a hazy look to the sky. That’s wildfire smoke from Canada, carried into the region by the jet stream.

You may have noticed the hazy skies across Arkansas today, that’s not clouds, but smoke from wildfires burning over 1,000 miles away in Canada. The jet stream is carrying that smoke all the way into the southern U.S., reaching as far as Mississippi, Alabama, and even parts of Florida. This hazy look may linger through Sunday and possibly into the early to middle part of next week.

A G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm is possible Sunday night into early Monday, potentially bringing the Northern Lights as far south as Missouri and northern portions of the Ozarks. A powerful solar flare hit on May 30 or 31, and it’s sending a huge wave of energy our way. This might trigger a G4 geomagnetic storm around June 1 or 2, which could bring the Northern Lights as far south as Missouri or even portions of the northern Ozarks.

Arkansas is enjoying a picture-perfect Saturday with sunshine, low humidity, and highs in the 70s and 80s. Northern parts of the state even dipped into the 50s this morning, making for a refreshing start. But changes are on the way as clouds build back in tonight, especially in the north and northwest. Scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder are possible Sunday morning, mainly across northern and central Arkansas. While it won’t be a washout, a quick downpour is possible early in the day.
