JAY – In the shadow of Jay Peak, Gerardo Ortiz teaches third and fourth grade students. He has been at the Jay-Westfield (Jay-Westfield) Joint Elementary School for about 14 years. “This is my home,” he said with pride, while sitting in his classroom as students got ready to leave for the weekend. Before working at Jay-Westfield school he worked at Newport City Elementary School and did student teaching at Newport Town School.

NEWPORT CITY – New England certainly is a large historic piece of the United States settlement and Vermont is no exception. A film produced, written, and directed by Jay Craven, a Northeast Kingdom resident, outlines how Vermont became a state. The one hour and 43-minute movie, ‘Lost Nation’, had a public showing at the North Country Union High School Auditorium Wednesday evening.

IRASBURG - The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are blaming driver error as the cause of a tractor trailer crash on Route 58 Saturday morning. According to the DMV, at about 9:02 a.m., DMV Law Enforcement and safety inspectors were called to the vicinity of 1864 Route 58 in Irasburg for a commercial vehicle rollover. When they arrived, inspectors located a tractor-trailer combination overturned and off the roadway.

NEWPORT CITY – Some students excel more at book learning while others succeed better with hands-on learning and building things. Many of those who like to use their hands take classes at the North Country Career Center (NCCC). Hazen Converse teaches such students. He teaches the engineering and digital fabrication program at the school. Hazen, a graduate from North Country Union High School, got into teaching because he and his wife decided to relocate to Newport City.

DERBY LINE – Plans to renovate the historic Haskell Opera House and Library, which is partly in the United States and partly in Canada, are well underway. The plans entail changing an emergency exit on the Canadian side of the building to a regular entrance so visitors entering from Canada can have an egress to the building.
