NEW KENT — A weekend event will take place May 2-4 at The New Kent Ordinary in New Kent to commemorate Patrick Henry’s demand to the royal Governor, Lord Dunmore, to return gunpowder stolen from the powder magazine in Williamsburg. This event is free and open to the public and will include historic talks, an encampment and drills by the 7th Regiment of the Continental Line, according to The New Kent Ordinary.

YORKTOWN — Blues, Brews & BBQ returns to Yorktown’s Riverwalk Landing from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. According to York County, the event promises a smorgasbord of craft beers, mouthwatering barbecue available for purchase, and the sweet sounds of the area’s finest blues musicians on the scenic Riverwalk Landing Stage. Festivities begin at noon with a performance by The Fifes and Drums of York Town.

NEWPORT NEWS — Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg announced it is now accepting applications for its 2025 First-Time Homebuyer Program. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. According to the nonprofit, it partners with local families to build decent and affordable homes. Selected homebuyers purchase their homes through an affordable, zero-interest mortgage over 20 to 30 years. Monthly payments include property taxes and homeowner’s insurance.

WASHINGTON — As President Donald Trump dismantles the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, advocates of the agency warn that veterans and military service members in the Commonwealth will suffer. The bureau partly enforces the Military Lending Act, which protects service members and their families from predatory lending and financial practices. The bureau has issued regulations that include limits on overdraft fees and restrictions on considering medical debt in credit reports.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Prices at the pump are coming down, according to AAA, even though this is the time of year when gas prices go up, and supply and demand are the main reason for the dip. After OPEC+ announced it’s increasing oil production next month by more than 400,000 barrels a day — much more than expected — the price of crude oil has been falling. Oversupply coupled with tepid gasoline demand is resulting in lower pump prices, AAA said.
