Veronica Shoemaker Florist, located at the corner of MLK Boulevard and Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard, has been a staple in the community since its founding. The shop is celebrating a milestone: 50 years of service.

The dream to retire in the Sunshine State is becoming harder to obtain for some families. A big driver in the dream crusher: insurance costs. Ed Hunds lives in Seattle and he’s been looking to retire with his wife to Florida. He says he is shocked by the prices of home insurance. Hunds currently pays $600 a year for his 2500 square-foot Seattle home. “They want 4 to 5 thousand dollars for a $400,000 home… So you know, that's a heck of a big difference,” Hunds said.

A 12-year-old girl is making a difference in Southwest Florida one paw at a time. Natalie Huntington created a nonprofit organization called Deck the Paws. She raises money to donate to local shelters, rescues, and families who can’t afford pet care. “100 percent of my money and profits goes to animal shelters and causes in SWFL,” Huntington said. Her inspiration is her cat, Luna, and Cash.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — This holiday season, a local etiquette teacher wants to remind us that manners are timeless. Suzanne Willis at Edison Ford Winter Estates knows a thing or two about tradition. “The inventor of the light bulb right here in my little hometown,” Willis said. Her Grandma Mimi served on the board of Edison Ford Winter Estates. “I have a picture of Charles Edison holding me as a baby in my grandma’s house,” she said. Twenty-two years ago, Willis had an idea to preserve Mimi’s legacy.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is working with county commissioners to keep convicted animal abusers from getting their hands on another animal. LCSO wants to create an animal abuser registry that would list those convicted of abuse. On Tuesday, Lee County Commissioners approved the animal registry ordinance on the consent agenda to move to a public hearing, so leaders can get the community’s thoughts. “It’s important to protect those that cannot protect themselves.
