Glutamate is one of the most important excitatory neurotransmitters within the mammalian central nervous system. The role of glutamate in regulating neural network signaling transmission through both synaptic and extra-synaptic paths highlights the importance of the real-time and continuous monitoring of its concentration and dynamics in living organisms.

1 Introduction The activities of the central nervous system (CNS) involve numerous biochemical and electrophysiological events occurring in space and time. Among various neuronal chemicals, glutamate is an important excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian CNS of particular interest to neuroscientists. HepG2 (HB-8065), HEK293T (CRL-11268), and derived cell lines were cultured according to ENCODE cell culture protocol. Briefly, HepG2 cells were cultured in MEM medium (Gibco, 11,095,080), supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (NEWZERUM, FBS-S500), 1 mM non-essential amino acids (Gibco, 11,140,050), 1 mM sodium pyruvate (Gibco, 11,360,070), 100 U/mL penicillin and 100 μg/mL streptomycin (Gibco, 15,140,148).

Phototherapy and sonodynamic therapy have been widely used for the synergistic treatment of tumors and have received considerable attention. However, an inappropriate tumor microenvironment, including pH, H2O2, oxygen, and glutathione levels, can reduce the therapeutic effects of synergistic phototherapy and sonodynamic therapy. Here, we designed a novel Bi-based soluble microneedle for the CT imaging of breast tumors and starvation therapy/gas therapy-enhanced phototherapy/sonodynamic therapy.
