The Philippine Cultural Center of Virginia will celebrate its 25th anniversary this Saturday. Along with the “silver jubilee,” local Filipinos are celebrating a legacy of community organizing that goes back more than 50 years in Hampton Roads, said Cynthia Romero, chairman of the Council of United Filipino Organizations of Tidewater. The Council oversees the Philippine Cultural Center in Virginia Beach.

Red Wing Park, home to more than 150 Yoshino cherry trees, gardens and woodland trails, will reopen Saturday after months of roadway improvements. The park closed in October for construction. Upgrades include a widened entry, repaved lanes, improved parking and a counterclockwise loop on Sakura Lane that will enhance traffic circulation. Construction paused and the park reopened briefly in early April for the cherry blossom season.

One road with sharp bends through dense trees and no shoulders connects the Sandbridge community with the rest of Virginia Beach. A car accident in May, however, blocked Sandbridge Road for 18 hours, reinvigorating city leaders’ desire for another route into the community. “No one could get in and out of Sandbridge during that time,” said Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson.

The Ridley Place neighborhood was home for generations of families, and now some are returning to live in a new mixed-income housing development. Newport News city leaders and housing advocates cut the ribbon Thursday on the first phase of the 155-unit Legacy Landing, an apartment community tucked into one of the southernmost neighborhoods on the peninsula. “Legacy Landing is not only a collection of new buildings,” said Vice Mayor Curtis Bethany.
