The Virginia Beach City Public Schools board convened Tuesday night and voted to keep in place an April resolution to suspend diversity, equity and inclusion policies. School board members who called the emergency meeting introduced a motion to amend the previous resolution, and pause enacting some of its directives while federal courts litigate the issue. The motion failed in a 5-5 vote, with one member absent.

That’s why the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk used a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to start fundraising to house its collection of nearly 10,000 works on paper.

The city council received presentations from department heads and comments from residents throughout April, and it is gearing up to hash out the budget on Tuesday. One item that’s drawn a lot of attention is the proposal to cut five full-time library employees’ positions to reduce the overall library budget. The cuts include four branch service coordinators and an administrator.

Chloe Chamberlain studied herself in the mirror last Saturday at the Creative ReUse Center, her cargo pants and crop top exchanged for a tall column of black and blue sequins that faded into dark green. She found the evening gown at a thrift store and brought it to the center, where volunteers were making alterations on formal wear for Friday’s Rainbow Prom in Norfolk. Prom is a ubiquitous rite of passage for the American high schooler but often fraught for LGBTQ+ teens.
