EirGrid, as Ireland’s Transmission System Operator, is responsible for ensuring the balance of supply and demand on the Irish electricity system. EirGrid does this by a process of directing energy generators to increase or reduce supply and/or directing demand response facilities to increase or reduce their demand (referred to as “dispatch” and “re-dispatch”) in accordance with Irish Single Electricity Market (SEM) rules.

The CRU has published its decision paper on the grid
access pathway for Phase 1 offshore wind projects that were
unsuccessful in the ORESS 1 capacity auction concluded in June
2023.
The first offshore renewable electricity support scheme auction
(ORESS 1) received submissions from six projects. Of these six submissions, four received a Notice of Award
comprising 3,074 MW of awarded capacity.

The Government’s cross-departmental Offshore Wind Delivery Taskforce has published its “indicative roadmap” towards the State’s next offshore wind auction (ORESS 2.1). This builds on the momentum from Ireland’s successful first offshore renewable electricity subsidy scheme auction round (ORESS 1) in May. Roughly 3GW of offshore wind generation capacity was awarded under ORESS 1 in what was a breakthrough moment for the country’s offshore wind market.

of a national Private Wires policy for Ireland.
Private wire arrangements are where an electricity generator and
a demand user are able to create a physical connection for their
own internal dedicated supply of electricity, thus by-passing the
public distribution network, but are not located on the same
property.

Today marks an important date for prospective bidders in the third onshore auction under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS 3), as the Government publishes its provisional qualification decision on a member private basis via the RESS Auction Platform. The final qualification decision date is scheduled for 1 September 2023, with bidding opening on 8 September 2023 and final auction results anticipated on 9 October 2023.
