    Last year, nearly one-quarter of Houston ISD's more than 50,000 high school students spent two hours and 14 minutes taking the SAT as part of a nationwide SAT School Day program. Not so for the ACT. Just over 1,000 HISD high school students took the ACT college entrance exam in 2024, representing the largest share of students taking the test in at least six years.

    Although Houston ISD students' SAT participation rates have returned to pre-COVID levels, average scores continued to slip in 2024, further evidence of the pandemic's lingering effects on student learning and college readiness. HISD students' average composite scores fell by more than 30 points in the first school year after the COVID pandemic. Those scores have continued to dip further each year since, reflecting national trends, according to data obtained by the Chronicle.

    All students are eligible to use Houston ISD's bus transportation system for summer school this year — as long as they can ge to a nearby campus. The district will use a "hub" model to bus students from schools that are not hosting summer school to schools that are hosting summer programs, Houston ISD's Chief of Organizational Effectiveness Kari Feinberg said at a District Advisory Committee meeting Tuesday. Houston ISD will host summer school at 65 campuses from June 11 through July 18.
