Since the beginning of March, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center has taken in an unusually high number of sick sea lions and cetaceans, all showing signs of domoic acid toxicosis. The acid is a neurotoxin produced by the marine algae Pseudo-nitzschia and has been found moving its way down the Southern California coast from San Luis Obispo County. "We're counting the beginning of March as when the uptick in patients really started," a PMMC spokesperson said.

A mounted patrol unit may soon become the latest addition to the local police department, thanks to a new fundraising campaign by the Laguna Beach Police & Community Foundation (LBPCF). "The benefits from having a mounted unit, not just internally to the police department and the police employees, but to the community, are quite remarkable," said Glenn Gray, president of the LBPCF, who added that the idea of funding a mounted patrol came to the board a couple of months ago.

Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education President Dee Perry announced this week that she and Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Jeff Dixon, who is currently serving as acting superintendent, have agreed on the proposed terms of a special services contract for the position of acting superintendent, according to the district. The board voted unanimously, 5-0, in closed session to appoint Dixon as acting superintendent during its regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 9.
