Max Anchor is considered the Vancouver Whitecaps’ goalkeeper of the future in MLS. But it’s a process of many steps. This year the 20-year-old is on loan to Pacific FC of the Canadian Premier League. He said the step up from MLS Next Pro is the difference between boys and men. Anchor will be patrolling the box today when PFC plays York United in CPL action at 5 p.m. at Starlight Stadium. “The maturity is the biggest thing,” Anchor said of the difference.

A powerhouse Lower Island girls’ high school soccer season concluded Thursday night at Starlight Stadium with a Battle of the Bays in the Ryan Cup final. But there’s plenty more to come with the Island Triple-A championship tournament on the Oak Bay school field and Braefoot Park pitch next Thursday and Friday, out of which three teams will advance to the B.C. championship tournament May 29-31 at Centennial Stadium on the University of Victoria campus.

The Chilliwack Chiefs ended the Victoria Grizzlies’ B.C. Hockey League season Friday night in the Fraser Valley. The Chiefs defeated the Grizzlies 5-4 in Game 5 of the their best-of-seven Coastal Conference final to win the series 4-1 before 2,246 fans at the Chilliwack Coliseum. The Chiefs advance to the BCHL Fred Page Cup league final against the winner of the Interior Conference final between the Penticton Vees and Brooks Bandits.

Victoria Grizzlies interim head coach Geoff Grimwood used a metaphor from another sport to describe the situation his club faces in the B.C. Hockey League playoffs. “We will see what we are like when we have to wrestle with our shoulders close to the mat,” he said. The Grizzlies are one loss away from being pinned. The Chilliwack Chiefs lead their best-of-seven Coastal Conference final series 3-1 heading into the fifth game tonight at the Chilliwack Coliseum.
