Following a shooting on April 20 near an Easter event at TB McPherson Park, Gainesville City Manager Cynthia Curry told city commissioners during an April 24 general policy meeting that the permit for the event never should have been approved. Curry said she was never brought into the information loop regarding the permitting process for the event billed as an Easter egg hunt and that she is very “disappointed, dismayed and saddened” on what finally resulted.

Selling a few different types of breakfast sandwiches cooked under a tent on a portable grill from Walmart has led to local business growing rapidly. The growth of Breakfast Smoke food truck, whose owner considers it to be more of a diner, can be attributed to the affordability, quality and flavor of the food served at the business in a lot at 904 E. University Ave. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday.

Since its humble beginnings in 1903, when it was founded by five Christian women, the group’s mission has been to help women in need, said Michelle Rutledge, a member of group.

Samiyah Daniels, a senior at Eastside High School, was awarded the Joseph “Joel” Buchanan Drum Major for Justice Scholarship Award given to an Alachua County high school senior who has overcome tremendous obstacles to graduate and who will attend college.
