CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A potential controversy over the location for a new mental health facility in our area has taken a turn. The state is looking for a place to build a new hospital to replace the one at Moccasin Bend. They determined they could not expand the current facility because of plans to develop the Bend as a historic park. A tract on Tunnel Boulevard was a possible new site. There was even a community meeting scheduled for tonight to debate whether residents wanted it there.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Weather has once again intervened in another IRONMAN competition. IRONMAN 70.3 officials they are cancelling the swimming part of the triathlon for safety reasons. The flow rate of the Tennessee River could hit 50,000 cubic feet per second on Sunday, which is more than double the normal speed at Ross’s Landing. That would prevent safety assets from holding their positions.

CLEVELAND, Tennessee (WDEF) – The Cleveland City School system has decided to build two new facilities to keep up with their growing population. Cleveland has added 5,500 new homes in the city since 2021, and that means student enrollment has been growing. So the system has decided they need two new elementary schools to keep up. They will build one in the northwest part of town and the other in the southwest. The system has 7 elementary schools right now.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – A Tennessee Congressman has finally reviewed documents on the Covenant School shooting in Nashville more than two years ago. Three students and three adults were killed in the attack. But police withheld documents from the public on the shooter’s motives. Police agencies often hold back inflammatory writings by mass shooters to keep from spreading their message. But this one became a political football.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – UTC officially has a new chancellor. The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees officially approved the appointment of Dr. Lori Mann Bruce Friday morning. She takes over on June 30th. Dr. Bruce is currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Tennessee Tech. The board also welcomed former Governor Bill Haslam. He was appointed to the board by Speaker Cameron Sexton. Dr. Bruce’s appointment was welcomed back in Chattanooga.
