CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – There’s a new giraffe in town. The Chattanooga Zoo has added a one year old male to the giraffe herd here. His name is Kuzco, named after a character in “The Emperor’s New Groove.”He becomes the fourth giraffe in the herd. Kuzco is 12 feet tall right now but will grow to 16 feet and blend in with the rest of the herd. He comes to Chattanooga from New Orleans.

Chattanooga (WDEF) – The Mayor announces that Chattanooga has officially been named the first National Park City in North America. City leaders have been courting the National Park City Foundation for several months now. The organization sent representatives here to tour the city last month. The movement is a grassroots effort to commit both residents and leaders to making cities greener. Mayor Kelly says this is a big deal for the city.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up for an East Hamilton graduate who drowned last week in the Tennessee River. 19 year old Maurice Clanton Junior was swimming with friends near Skull Island. He was a freshman in college. Clanton played drums in the marching band in high school. The Go Fund me campaign was set up by a local pastor and family friend to assist them with their financial burdens.

ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – We have 15 local schools on the under-performing list in the state of Georgia. And that means parents of those students can apply to get state money to send their kids to private schools instead. It’s part of the Georgia Promise Scholarship Program. The schools that qualify for the alternative scholarships are the bottom 25% in a state ranking. The list includes four high schools in our region… Dade, Murray, Coahulla Creek and Southeast Whitfield.
