At least three people experienced “heat fatigue” from the hot weather at Fall Fest on Sunday afternoon. Tom Misuraca, associate director for campus programs at Pitt, said they usually have a WaterMonster to provide students free water at outdoor events, but “forgot” to do so at this year’s Fall Fest. “It was something that fell through the cracks,” Misuraca said. “When we’ve had it there in the past, even on hot days, students haven’t used it.

Nine minutes into a Zoom meeting on Aug. 16, 32 members of the Program Evaluation and Research Unit staff learned their positions would be ending within two months. No one had the opportunity to turn on their mics or send a message into the chat. Jesse Dubin, senior program operations specialist, said they were shocked it happened in that way, but that they knew the situation was potentially impending.

Amy Flick is a professor in Pitt’s English department and is the adviser for the public communication of science and technology certificate. Her research is in rhetoric in public health systems, and she specifically focuses on harm reduction tactics and patient narratives. According to Stella Ross, a junior microbiology major and a mentee of Flick, the reason students connect with Flick is because of her commitment to her profession and her compassion for others.

Though he admits that he may use TikTok too much, Erik Hart, a first-year computer science major, thinks “banning it is a little silly.” The United States House of Representatives passed a bill on March 13 that, if signed into law, would force TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell its share of the app or face getting banned from American app stores.

Socials: Student Government Board introduced a new resolution expressing solidarity with Hong Seng Knitting and hosted a protestor rights town hall at Tuesday night’s meeting. Board Member Matt Jurich started Student Government Board’s Tuesday night meeting by introducing a new resolution calling for the University to terminate its contract with Nike.

Over 60 student volunteers will get together on April 7 to build the stage where artists JID, Luh Tyler, My Favorite Color and Pitt Factor winner 9FiftySeven will perform. However, the efforts that go into planning Bigelow Bash entail much more. Bigelow Bash, Pitt’s spring music and arts festival, will take place this Sunday on Schenley Drive. At last year’s Bigelow Bash, hundreds of students came out to see performances by featured artists Claud and Carly Rae Jepsen.

The Pitt Spanish and film and media studies departments came together on Tuesday, March 26 to host a screening of the 2022 drama “Utama,” along with the writer and director, Alejandro Loayza Grisi. Loayza made his feature-length directorial debut with the film. “Utama” garnered critical acclaim and won awards including best world cinema drama at Sundance.

About 50 students attended Carib Fete: A Carnival Fest in the O’Hara Student Center on Sunday. The event was hosted by the Caribbean Student Association in collaboration with the Latinx Student Association to celebrate Caribbean carnival culture. Two students practice dancing salsa during “Carib Fete: A Carnival Fest,” hosted by the Caribbean Student Association and Latinx Student Association on Saturday in the O’Hara Student Center.

With finals around the corner, students and staff alike welcomed a little fun with friends to take their minds off the stress of studying and grading. April Fools’ day, a time for japes and goofs with friends, gave the Pitt family a well-deserved break. Luca Kold, a visiting lecturer in the English department, said that the holiday offered such a great distraction that he could hardly bring himself to start working again. “I told my friends that I didn’t participate this year,” Kold said.

Many students travel throughout the school year. Given the timing of Easter, weeks after spring break, students had to weigh their options when deciding whether to go home for the holiday. A spokesperson for the university said that although Pitt does not have off for any religious holidays in the spring, students are allowed to and encouraged to ask for accommodations from their professors.
