In the first two days of the NCAA basketball transfer portal spring cycle, Pitt has seen four players enter their names with plans to depart the program. The group includes redshirt first-year forward Marlon Barnes, junior forwards Guillermo Diaz-Graham and Jorge Diaz-Graham and first-year guard Amsal Delalić. The first player to announce their departure from the program was Barnes. It was first reported Sunday night that he would look for a new school to join.

Pitt men’s basketball’s (16-12, 7-10 ACC) season remains on life support. Without an improbable ACC tournament run, the Panthers will watch March from their couches once again. Fans may question the point of these final games with a seemingly inevitable postseason outcome. In actuality, these games become far more important for different reasons — the future health of the program depends on them. If the team “quits” over these last few games, why would any transfer buy into the program?

In recent Student Government Board meetings, board members have expressed concerns about increased allocations spending and whether the $900,000 budget will last the whole school year. Data compiled by The Pitt News shows while SGB is granting allocations at an unprecedented rate, the denial rate is the highest since its budget increased in 2019. As of Feb. 5, the board has allocated $499,312.09 across 74 requests.

On a frigid Saturday in December, snow piled on the sidelines, with each player’s breath visible from the stand and a standing-room-only crowd at hand, No. 2 Pitt men’s soccer (14-6-0, 6-2 ACC) battled Vermont (16-2-5, 4-1-2 AEC) in an Elite Eight showdown. In a tense contest, the match came down to a handful of Pitt mistakes and Vermont’s commitment to defense, as the Catamounts left Pittsburgh with a 2-0 victory and its first College Cup appearance in program history.

The Center for Creativity hosted a “Junk Journal Journey” event on Wednesday afternoon in Hillman Library’s Text & conText Lab. On Sunday night, No. 2 seed Pitt mens’ soccer (13-5-0) defeated Cornell (13-4-2) 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA tournament — its first ever meeting with the Ivy League opponent. The Panthers achieved the win short handed, as the referees issued junior defender Jackson Gilman a red card at the end of the first half. Even amidst the frigid weather, the Panthers’ faithful stayed loud and proud in their support of the Panthers and criticisms of the referee.
