The Freeport Police Department and others continue to investigate the shooting deaths of two men. According to Freeport police, officers responded to a home in the 1700 block of South Galena Avenue on the morning of June 5 on a call for service stating two people had been shot. When officers arrived, they found two men who had sustained apparent gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as Chad Wirsing, 51, and Paul Laird, 50. Wirsing and Laird resided at the residence.

Michele Pankow, current Rockford Fire Chief, will be the first woman in Illinois to serve as State Fire Marshal. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced Pankow's appointment, which awaits Senate confirmation. Pankow has served with the Rockford Fire Department for 32 years, rising through the ranks from firefighter/paramedic to chief. Rockford's Michele Pankow will be the first woman in the state of Illinois to serve as the State Fire Marshal. Gov. JB Pritzker made the announcement Wednesday.

Rockford Jams, a summer concert series at Sinnissippi Park, begins June 5 and celebrates its 75th anniversary. Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has charged a Galena police officer for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material. In a news release issued June 2, Raoul's office announced charges against Eli Barthel, 23, of Freeport, Illinois. Barthel is being charged with two Class 2 felony counts of child sexual assault material possession, punishable by up to seven years in prison, and one Class 3 felony count of child sexual assault material possession, punishable by up to five years in prison.
