The Atlantic hurricane season is officially under way. In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, which came here last summer (and also Hurricanes Milton and Helene, which were costly and deadly elsewhere), we're all hoping 2025 is less impactful than 2024. Last year, a record number of Harris County residents applied for FEMA aid to assist with home repairs and temporary housing costs. This year, though, that help from the federal government might not be there when Houstonians need it.

There's a reason the word "fan" is short for "fanatic." While most sports fans show their appreciation and disappointment with their favorite players and teams in generally appropriate ways, sometimes, some of them go too far. An example occurred this past weekend, when Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers, Jr. struggled in just his second pitching appearance in more than 900 days. McCullers has been recovering from major injuries and does not yet have full command of his pitches.

Pope Leo XIV celebrated the first mass of his papacy Friday morning at the Sistine Chapel at The Vatican in Rome. The former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was close to the late Pope Francis, and is expected to focus on some of the same themes Francis did, including advocating for migrants and caring for the poor. But what remains unclear is what the new leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics might do or say about the church’s generations-long mishandling of clergy sexual abuse.

President Donald Trump says he wants to be the "fertilization president." He's referencing concerns raised about birth rates across the country. And he, and right-wing "pro-natalists" are seeking ways to incentivize American couples to have more babies. The president and those pro-natalists have floated several ideas to do so, from one-time payments to new mothers, to preferential treatment for parents in some government programs, to funding fertility education initiatives and beyond.
