The Chiefs did not take the most straight and narrow path to victory, however. The Chiefs were up 7-6 at halftime even after turning the ball over three times. A muffed punt from Richie James deep in the Chiefs' own territory led to three of those points. The offensive line also struggled with plenty of false starts and holding penalties. The Chiefs managed to lose the penalty battle 12-2, as well as the turnover battle 3-1 and still come away with the victory.

We never thought the Chiefs would need a “get-right game” as early as Week 2, but alas, here we are. If there is one silver lining, it is that Travis Kelce’s injury kept him out of this game, but it seems like it is going to be short-term. Kansas City looked exactly like a team that was forced to change its game plan two days before the game after preparing to feature Kelce for the last month and change. “Yeah, I mean you’re losing one of the best, I think the best tight end of all time, but other guys got to step up,” Mahomes said.

Interestingly enough, third-year quarterback Shane Buechele entered the game after Patrick Mahomes and before veteran Blaine Gabbert. There may or may not be something to make of that, but Buechele did not disappoint. He went a perfect 10 for 10 for 105 yards. All of the first three quarterbacks dominated as Mahomes finished with a 109 quarterback rating, Buechele with a 110.4 and Gabbert with a perfect 158.3. They combined to go 27 for 33 for 330 yards and three touchdowns.

Prince started off training camp strong with a fair amount of hype. His preseason Week 1 showing was solid, earning 50 yards on six touches. But now Perine is cutting into his time, earning first-team reps in camp this week. He also earned more carries (six) against the Saints.

Pre-season games should always be taken with a grain of salt, but there was plenty to glean on for the Kansas City Chiefs as they lost to old friend Derek Carr and the New Orleans Saints 26-24. After a turnover on downs and a punt for the Chiefs offense, along with some early struggles from the defense, Kansas City found themselves down 17-0 early in the second quarter. “All in all, it was good to get a game in,” head coach Andy Reid said.
