Residents unhappy about plan to build affordable housing in Bowness greenspace.

A group of Bowness residents gathered at a small greenspace on Bowness Road on Saturday to oppose plans to put up a new building. The space at 6623 Bowness Road currently has a small playground and about a dozen small trees. Area residents say it’s been a part of their community for 30 years “They just planted these beautiful trees that have been neglected by the City of Calgary,” said Jackie Stebanuk, a Bowness resident.

One of Calgary’s Latin festivals drew the crowds downtown for a weekend of music, food and fun. Fiestaval Latino featured dozens of acts from across Canada and Mexico, including a mariachi band and some big name performers, like Calgary’s own Oscar Lopez. The event is a celebration of Latin culture in Calgary. “We have Columbians, Chileans, Venezuelans have come a lot, Mexicans as well, it’s a very diverse community,” said Christian Greiffenstein.

When Matt Devine turned 30 years old, he probably couldn’t imagine cycling across Canada. He was a heavy drinker and smoker who weighed 300 pounds, and was told by his doctor that he was on the way to a heart attack. It was a major wake-up call. “I said, enough is enough, and I started to get fit,” Devine said. The Edmontonian poured himself into improving his physical health. But as a CEO, he was under phenomenal pressure, and the mental side of the equation wasn’t being addressed.

Friends and family of Bruce Covernton held a barbeque in the parking lot of McMahon Stadium on Saturday to honour his legacy. Covernton was a tackle for the Stampeders and was selected first overall in the 1992 college draft. He was voted the west's top rookie that year, and top offensive lineman in 1993. He was part of the Grey Cup championship teams in 1992 and 1998. Now there is a new memorial fund started in his name. “We’re already over $20,000 raised,” said Rob Cote, organizer.
Calgary babies make a diaper dash for it

As adult runners prepare for the Servus Calgary Marathon on Sunday, May 26, some pint-sized competitors took part in another race on Saturday. The Wee Wild Ones Diaper Dash saw 64 babies and toddlers race down a 42.2 foot long raceway at GMC Stadium at Stampede Park. “The intention was to crown four winners but it was absolute chaos, so I don’t know if we can even pick four because they were back and forth, it was a lot of fun,” said Kirsten Fleming of Run Calgary.

A warm and sunny Sunday brought out the crowds to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day, whether they were Irish or not. About 600 people came out to Central Memorial High School for the annual St. Patrick’s Road Race. The 5 and 10 kilometre runs have been going strong in Calgary for 37 years, and organizers say attendance is back up to what it was before the pandemic.

Three Saturday shows at the BMO Centre drew people who love the outdoors into the indoors. The Calgary Golf Show took over part of the centre courtesy of the Professional Golfers’ Association of Alberta. It featured an indoor driving range, equipment, clothing and accessories. A long drive competition was open to the public, along with long putt, chipping and closest to the pin challenges. Organizers said with over 40 vendors, there was something for every fan of the game.

The holy month of Ramadan began on Sunday evening with the sighting of the new moon. The annual tradition calls for dawn to dusk fasting, prayer, charity and nighttime feasts. “Ramadan is the best opportunity to work on yourself, on your heart, to be a better person,” said Imam Jamal Hammoud of the Akram Jomaa Islamic Centre in Calgary. But as Muslims honour the call to faith, they also worry about the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

Experts are warning that Alberta could be facing a difficult wildfire season this year. The combination of global climate change and El Niño is driving the risk of fire. Previous years saw Calgarians suffering due to wildfire smoke. A workshop will be held on Monday in Canmore to help people minimize the dangers. Participants will learn practical tips for staying safe and can ask questions. The workshop begins at 2:30 p.m at the Canmore Recreation Centre.
