BAKER, La. (Louisiana First) — Helix Community Schools officials laid out the plans and benefits of Baker School System becoming a charter school district at a community town hall meeting. Preston Castille, CEO and President of Helix Community Schools, showcased a presentation at the meeting about all the benefits merging with the charter school system will bring to the community. After the flood in 2016 flooded Baker High School, they had to rebuild. They’ve only been fully operating for a year.

Baker School Board approved and allowed the charter school to use the vacant property if needed.

PORT ALLEN, La. (Louisiana First)—Some residents and library owners in West Baton Rouge are concerned that the future of both libraries could be in jeopardy. Tamie Martin, Executive Director of West Baton Rouge Parish Libraries, said she’s in shock after results from the March 29 elections revealed that the library’s tax renewal proposal was voted against. “I wasn’t expected at all. I didn’t hear any questions or concerns from the community leading up to the election,” she said.
