Early on the afternoon of July 14, 2022, the driver of a Grand Island police car allegedly ran a red light and crashed violently into a van, seriously injuring the van’s 77-year-old driver and also injuring a passenger, her 81-year-old husband. Global positioning data from a black box in the police car showed that Officer Thomas J. Franz, who was on his way to a service call, was driving his vehicle at over 63 mph when it hit the van, well above the posted speed limit, court records show.

BROCTON – Even a small, mostly rural village like Brocton has its hot spots. In the 1970s, one of its most popular watering holes was The Castle, an unlikely looking establishment built with stone taken from a centuries-old castle in Scotland. On a Sunday night, March 26, 1978, The Castle was crowded with locals enjoying a few drinks, listening to rock music and having some laughs with friends. Beth Ann Patterson Brown, 29, a divorcee, went to The Castle from her nearby Brocton home to join them.
