DUNCAN — The Clippers started the BCHL playoffs with a bang, but they didn’t get the result they wanted. Nanaimo had three goals in the first 3:43 of the game on markers by Luke Lavery, Justin Collins and Patrick Fortune on a power play. After that the Clippers were on the defensive and although they held a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes, they were down 4-3 by the second intermission.
VIU to host 2026 CCAA men’s basketball championship

NANAIMO — For the second time in four years the VIU Mariners will host a CCAA basketball national tournament. In 2022 it was the women’s nationals that ended with a silver medal finish for the university, now the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association has awarded the Mariners the 2026 men’s nationals. The tournament will take place March 18-21, 2026 and VIU athletic director Danielle Hyde said the work to put on the event is already underway.

NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners women’s basketball team is chasing down a second national gold medal in three years. The team is in New Brunswick preparing for their first game against the Mohawk Mountaineers out of Ontario on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 9 a.m.Mariners athletic director Danielle Hyde is proud of a group that has excelled with a 21-1 regular season record and a pair of wins at the recent PACWEST provincials.

NANAIMO — The VIU men’s Mariners are gunning for their second straight PACWEST provincial basketball championship and their third in four years. Coach Matt Kuzminski said his first place team will have their season defined by their performance at the provincial tournament. “We’re excited. It’s a long regular season and we did a good job improving all around with a 21-3 record and earning the number one seed. We’ve overcome a lot of adversity.

NANAIMO — The Clippers have only one loss in their last eight games and a big reason why is the goaltending of Chazz Nixon and Vladimir Nikitin. Both goalies have a shutout in February, with Nixon playing his best hockey in Nanaimo and Nikitin yet to suffer a defeat this season. Clippers coach and general manager Colin Birkas is excited to see the team rolling with a 10-2-1 record in 2025.

COLWOOD — The Clippers earned their first shutout of the season and won their fifth straight game with a 5-0 road victory over the Victoria Grizzlies on Friday, Feb. 7. Chazz Nixon stood tall in the Clippers’ crease with a 42 save performance at Q Centre in Colwood. He recorded his second career shutout and picked up his 12th victory of the season. Nixon has allowed two goals and made 93 saves in his last two starts. After a scoreless first period Nanaimo broke the game open in the second.

A retooled roster, players making strides in their personal play and the work of the coaching staff are being credited. While head coach and general manager Colin Birkas deserves much of the credit for the club’s 8-3 record since late December, he’s quick to praise the work of assistant coaches Gaelan Patterson and Evan Richardson.

PORT ALBERNI — The Clippers have their first four game winning streak of the season after a 3-2 shootout win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. It was tight throughout with Elliot Perreault opening the scoring for the Clippers but Jacob Terpstra knotting the game before the first intermission. Will Subject notched his first goal in Nanaimo colours with a second period point shot to give the road team a 40 minute lead.

NANAIMO — The BCHL journey of Luke Lavery began with his hometown Clippers on Apr. 3, 2021 and reached the 200 game mark this past weekend. Lavery, who is now in his second go around with the Clippers, is still processing the 200 game milestone, achieved Friday, Jan. 24 in Powell River. “It’s crazy to think that I’ve gotten this far, all the way to 200 games. I remember when I was 16 and I had one older guy hit 200 games. I thought there was no way I would ever get there but here we are now.
