DUNCAN — The Clippers started the BCHL playoffs with a bang, but they didn’t get the result they wanted. Nanaimo had three goals in the first 3:43 of the game on markers by Luke Lavery, Justin Collins and Patrick Fortune on a power play. After that the Clippers were on the defensive and although they held a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes, they were down 4-3 by the second intermission.

NANAIMO — For the second time in four years the VIU Mariners will host a CCAA basketball national tournament. In 2022 it was the women’s nationals that ended with a silver medal finish for the university, now the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association has awarded the Mariners the 2026 men’s nationals. The tournament will take place March 18-21, 2026 and VIU athletic director Danielle Hyde said the work to put on the event is already underway.

The team is in New Brunswick preparing for their first game against the Mohawk Mountaineers out of Ontario on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 9 a.m.Mariners athletic director Danielle Hyde is proud of a group that has excelled with a 21-1 regular season record and a pair of wins at the recent PACWEST provincials.

NANAIMO — The Clippers sit in a crowded middle of the pack in the BCHL’s Coastal Division. A strong March could put Nanaimo into the top four in the standings while a poor month could see the team fall out of the playoffs. The Clippers went on a run of getting points in 10 consecutive hockey games, but now they’ve lost three in a row.

NANAIMO — The VIU men’s Mariners are gunning for their second straight PACWEST provincial basketball championship and their third in four years. Coach Matt Kuzminski said his first place team will have their season defined by their performance at the provincial tournament. “We’re excited. It’s a long regular season and we did a good job improving all around with a 21-3 record and earning the number one seed. We’ve overcome a lot of adversity.
