The Red Sox season was already a dozen games deep when, on April 9, a small ski area in New Hampshire fired up its snowmaking guns to add to the snow base on its main slope. It’s unusual for a ski area to make snow this time of year. The milder weather is a factor, of course. On Monday in the Mount Washington Valley, the temperature reached 60 degrees. Attitash, Bretton Woods, Cannon Mountain, and Waterville Valley held their final ski days last weekend.
Winter storm watch this weekend in NH

March will close out with some gnarly winter weather this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of New Hampshire starting late Friday night. The storm advisory includes all but the Southern Tier and the Seacoast, though that area is expected to see a dusting of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain. From Concord and to the north, the forecast calls for a heavy mixed precipitation.

A mechanical issue with a ski lift at Cannon Mountain in Franconia prompted the evacuation of 64 skiers on Wednesday afternoon. In a statement, Cannon Mountain said “a bolt affixed to the power take-off (PTO) shaft failed on the Peabody Express Quad lift” around 10:13 a.m. “While all chairlifts and equipment at Cannon undergo regular inspection and testing, mechanical issues can occasionally occur,” the statement read.

Democrats swept the races for New Hampshire’s two congressional seats Tuesday, with one victor a political newcomer and the other an experienced campaigner with a long record of elected office in the state. In the 1st Congressional District, Democrat Chris Pappas won a fourth straight term in Congress, defeating Republican Russell Prescott. And in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, Maggie Goodlander — in her first run for elected office — defeated Republican Lily Tang Williams.

The Northern Lights created quite a sight over parts of New Hampshire and New England on Thursday night. Along Ocean Boulevard in Rye and North Hampton, many drivers pulled over to get out and appreciate the aurora borealis. Joe Gray won the Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race on Saturday for his eighth victory in the iconic foot race. Gray, of Colorado Springs, now holds the record for the most wins in the race up the Mount Washington Auto Road. Kayla Lampe of Shelburne Falls, Mass., won the women’s field. It is a 7.6 mile run and, as racegoers celebrate with intended irony, there is only one hill.
