The supermarket giant was refused permission to build 20,000 sq ft store close to Bolton Wanderers’ Toughsheet Stadium last year. Aldi has appealed this rejection, which was handed down by the committee against the recommendation of officers two and a half years after the application was submitted. Bolton Council will now have to decide whether to contest the appeal. Defeat could incur significant costs to the authority.

Frogmore is looking for a buyer for Cotton Quay, a site earmarked for 1,500 homes that the developer has previously described as “the best” in Salford. CBRE and Vandermolen Real Estate have been instructed to sell the eight-acre Cotton Quay on Salford’s waterfront. Posting on LinkedIn, CBRE director Will Atherton described the site as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape a new waterfront destination in Manchester”.

FRANKLY SPEAKING… It’s difficult not to love Frank Rothwell, the charismatic owner of Oldham Athletic FC who three years after rescuing his hometown club saw them return to the Football League last weekend. Already in the record books as the oldest man to row the Atlantic solo, Rothwell’s latest slightly madcap scheme is to bring a giant steel gear wheel, signifying Oldham’s history, to a site close to the M60 in Hollinwood.

The council was admonished in 2023 for its record on determining planning applications but has since made sufficient improvement to warrant having its powers reinstated. Then-secretary of state Michael Gove designated Chorley Council in December 2023 for “persistent under-performance” in relation to its planning department. At the time, Chorley had seen more than 15% of its refusals overturned at appeal between October 2020 and September 2022.

101 Embankment in Salford and One Portland Street in Manchester have been sold to investors Melford Capital and Midos respectively. In the last few days, M&G has finalised deals to offload a combined 240,000 sq ft of office space in Manchester across two buildings. The 180,000 sq ft 101 Embankment sold for around £75m, while One Portland Street was bought for £7.5m. Melford, based in Guernsey, has snapped up 101 Embankment for £5m under the asking price.
